“The Squat used to be the old Manchester Univ College of Music. A beautiful building with a concert hall in the centre and then rehearsal rooms all around. The acoustics were brilliant and the rehearsal rooms were sound-proofed small rooms.
In 1975 The Univ decided to pull it down to build a car park. I led an occupation to protect the building, and to use it to accommodate students who were unable to get lodgings at the start of term. To help pay for the upkeep etc we put on concerts and AYLTP were one of those who performed there. After a few months the Univ reprived the building, cleaned it out and it continued as a music venue for a few years.
By then I had left Uni and started New Manchester Review and again to raise money for the magazine I started putting bands on at Band on the Wall (Mondays) and Rafters on Fridays. Again AYLTP played at both venues. Along withe every other up and coming band, Joy Division, John Cooper Clarke, Frantic Elevators (later Simply Red), and of course my band, The Smirks.....ho hum. And of course Ray Lowry was illustrator, cartoonist and did a strip cartoon "It's Only Rock n Roll" for NMR.”
